Easter is Resurrection Day

Easter is Resurrection Day
Growing up in a Christian home, Easter Sunday held some of the best memories of the year, especially for children. Spending time with family, worshipping God in church and having some special traditions made the day special. Even today when I smell cider vinegar, it brings back memories of the decorated Easter egg hunt: before the hunt for the hidden eggs there was food color placed in vinegar filled bowls, hard boiled eggs carefully dipped, decorating them only to hide them. We could hardly wait for Easter morning: the night before our clothes had to be prepped-church shoes polished, dress shirt, pants and tie all wrinkle free and set out. IMG_3894After morning prayer we ate a delicious breakfast before setting off to Easter Sunrise service. As soon as Sunday School and church finished we retreated home to the Easter lunch of sweet potatoes with marshmallows baked on top, ham garnished in pineapple slices, hot buttermilk biscuits and green beans covered with bacon pieces. It wasn’t unusual for our grandparents, who wouldn’t attend church with us, to show up for the special lunch. Dad would rehearse the whole sermon to them (grandpa would comment he should have just came to church, it would have been a shorter sermon) before the first hymn was sang out by my sisters and then the lunch. When the evening finally came my folks would point out the Emmaus Road disciple painting hung on the living room wall, and comment how the Resurrected Jesus taught those disciples. “He is not here: for He is risen as He said…” Matthew 28:6 is embossed in my memory, what kind of Easter memories are you making for your family?
